Durban’s leading spice shop has announced an immediate price increase on products and customers are already looking elsewhere to buy their spices.

Gorima’s management said as much as they would like to keep their prices down, they needed to keep up with the rising costs of importing supplies and the exchange rate.

“Over the last year, we have managed to absorb price increases and maintain prices, however, with the increase in chilli prices from India, exchange rate volatility, shipping rates and fuel price increase, we unfortunately have to increase prices with immediate effect,” Gorima’s said.

“We are continually monitoring our pricing and will accommodate all our customers with the best possible pricing available in the market.”

The management said they guaranteed the best quality products and thanked customers for their support.

Reacting to the announcement, this is what Facebook users said:

Sandy Gounden: “Being in import myself I know first hand about price increases, however the increase that you guys have put in place is no way possible even with these factors in play.”

Asha Jagaroo: “Yes there has been a lot of people currently talking about the Gorima's price increases and the particular timings of when the prices of items go up. While we all understand price increases are needed there have been reports of things going up more than 50% which is very hard to understand.”

Shamane Balliram: “The recent price increase is so ridiculous that unfortunately we will buy our spices from an alternate source.”

Vandhana Sookan-Ramsoonder: “Being a long-term customer despite many increases over the last two years, this time the price increase % is not justified, sadly I will look elsewhere now.”

Dean Naidoo: “Gorima’s is just pure greedy … We can always look for alternatives and support small businesses and make them famous in the process … Gorima’s has lost the plot.”

Blanche Roskruge: “Your price hike is ridiculous and your prices went up a while back already and only sending a notice out now or is there another hike need to find an alternative place to get my spices.”

Rakisha Singh: “I will certainly not be shopping there since there will be a price increase... Gorima’s is being very greedy and not thinking of people who are supporting them.”

Amanda Ndlovu: “Increasing prices from R140 to R195 is really ridiculous. Not even R10 at least.”
