DURBAN – KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education uMlazi district director Ntokozo Cele died in hospital on Wednesday.

Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu and department head Nathi Ngcobo expressed their shock at the news on Thursday.

Cele was hospitalised in November 2021.

Mshengu sent the department’s condolences to Cele’s family, describing him as a valued member of the team who would be missed by his colleagues.

“We will keep Cele’s family in our thoughts as they go through this difficult time of mourning. He will be remembered for his discipline, dedication and commitment,” said Mshengu.

The Education Department will visit Cele’s family soon.

Cele took over as acting district director in 2018 after former director Bheki Ntuli unceremoniously left because he had running battles with a teacher union over the allocation of posts in the district. Cele became district director in April 2019.

His family had not could not be reached for comment.

Paying tribute on Facebook, Sphelele Maweni wrote: “My neighbour, my classmate with Nkosiyezwe Vezi Mfundi Sibiya, my friend I just finished a call from another friend breaking this heartbreaking news. What a friend you were, can go all out to help until you are sorted. My day is messed up now. Rest in peace Ndosi mfowakithi.”
