Multi-award-winning director and producer, Tebogo "Tebza" Malope is making waves with the announcement of his first independent film, "Spirit: The Movie“, set to release later this year.
Drawing creative inspiration from hip-hop artist Kwesta’s song “Spirit”, featuring Wale, the film builds upon the poignant themes explored in the original music video, which Malope directed.
According to a statement, the film promises to transform the vibrant visuals of the music video into a deeper cinematic exploration of identity, resilience and freedom.
"Creating my first independent film was an act of self-liberation - a bold journey in storytelling without constraints. Inspired by the characters from the 'Spirit' music video, I crafted a narrative that speaks to the power of identity and freedom,“ said Malope.
He added that the independence of the film allowed him the space to explore these characters not just as figures, but as reflections of the inner struggles people face in defining themselves.
The award-winning filmmaker, who celebrates 25 years in entertainment this year, is well-known for his work on films such as “Rise: The Siya Kolisi Story”, “Queen Sono”, “All the Kunenes want for Christmas“ among many others.
Known for his capability to delve into complex narratives, Malope’s upcoming film is anticipated to engage audiences with a rich tapestry of self-discovery and individual journeys.
The film features an impressive ensemble cast, including Lifetime Achievement Award winner Jerry Mofokeng, award-winning actress Rami Chuene, actor, comedian, filmmaker and writer, Kagiso Lediga and “Justice Served” star Motshabi Tyelele.
Reflecting on the film's mission, Malope shared: “This film is my way of honouring the journey we all take to understand who we are and the power of owning that truth, breaking free from conventional storytelling and celebrating who we are, both individually and collectively.”
