DURBAN – ANC KwaZulu-Natal secretary Bheki Mtolo says the new provincial leadership is unfazed by the amount of attention they are getting from both the public and the media.

Speaking on the sidelines of the announcement of the new Members of the Executive Council (MECs) for KZN by Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube on Thursday, Mtolo said anyone taking public office or representing the ruling party should know they would be scrutinised.

“We believe that public representatives should be subject to scrutiny in line with their duties of serving the public,” said Mtolo.

He added that anyone who was against such a principle wasn’t worthy of being a leader.

“We believe that the media should be given space to ask questions about public figures and leaders without fear of getting victimised. Any leader should always expect to be subject to public scrutiny, and this leadership is aware and appreciative of that,” Mtolo continued.

He conceded that the new leadership both in the ruling party in the province, and new administration in government faced challenges but expressed confidence that they would succeed.

He has cited the provision of crucial services such as water across communities and unlocking economic opportunities especially through small, micro and medium enterprises as some of the crucial targets that need to be attended to immediately.
