Durban - Ugu District Municipality on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast informed residents on Thursday the water supply to some areas in the Umzumbe and Umdoni Local Municipalities was disrupted after theft and vandalism of power supply infrastructure.

The municipality said Eskom cables had been stolen and the electrical panel and wiring vandalised at the Mtwalume water pump station.

“The roof structure of the water pump station at Mtwalume was removed by thieves and vandals in order to gain access to the pump station,” said the municipality.

The municipality said the theft meant the pump station could not pump water to Koelwater reservoirs and Umgababa areas.

The affected areas include:

  • Ward 7 under Umdoni LM( Koelwater)
  • Ward 19 under Umzumbe LM (Mgwaba and surrounding areas).

The municipality added Eskom had been notified and an internal team would assess the extent of the damages to initiate repairs as quickly as possible.

A case will also be opened at the nearest police station, it said.

“Restoration is not known yet. Emergency relief through water tankers is being arranged and will liaise with the affected ward councillors,” said the municipality.
