Several people injured in Durban after taxi veers off road after collision, hitting pedestrian

Durban - An unsuspecting pedestrian was struck by a taxi while walking on the pavement, following a collision at the corner of Gale Street and Canada Road in Congella, Durban on Tuesday.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said at around 7 am on Tuesday morning, paramedics responded to a serious taxi crash.

When paramedics arrived at the scene, they found that the two vehicles had collided in the junction, and the taxi had veered off the roadway.

Jamieson said the taxi struck a pedestrian on the pavement before coming to rest against the wall of a business premises.

“A quick triage revealed that 11 people had sustained various injuries,” he said.

The injuries ranged from moderate to serious and more ambulances and Advanced Life Support paramedics were called to assist.

“ALS Paramedics and Emergency Medical and Rescue Services stabilised all the patients and transported them through to various hospitals for the further care they required,” Jamieson said.

In another incident on Sunday, multiple people were injured in a serious taxi accident on the N2 northb ound near Umgeni Road.

The accident occurred in the afternoon, just before 5pm.

Jamieson said it was believed that the taxi somehow lost control and rolled numerous times before coming to rest on its roof.

He said some of the passengers were ejected from the taxi as it was rolling.

“Multiple people had sustained various injuries and were stabilised on scene before being transported to various Durban hospitals for the further care that they required,” Jamieson said.
