DURBAN - As 24 more Covid-19 deaths were recorded today which brings the total of deaths to 89 319 in the country, Health Minister Joe Phaahla urged the public to take the Covid-19 vaccine ahead of the imminent fourth wave that could hit the country soon.

“As of today the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases identified in South Africa is 2 923 751 with 358 new cases reported,” said the department.

The number of deaths stand at 89 319.

Phaahla, speaking at the 2021 Rotary Health Family Day outreach programme in Pretoria West, said the virus is still in our midst and every day new Covid-19 cases are being recorded.

He further described the vaccines as the only hope of long-term success to fight Covid-19.

“While South Africa has sufficient stock to immunise citizens the government is struggling to reach people,” he said.

Phaahla said he is hoping that the government will be able to make a breakthrough and that more people will take the jab.

“We have all learnt over the last 20 months that it is not over and there is going to be another resurgence of the infection and, therefore, we must be ready and protect everyone,” he said.

Last week the department said more than 23 million doses had been administered.

According to the department of health, the active cases in KwaZulu-Natal are 3 438, deaths are 14 770 and recoveries are 497 684.
