SA Tourism, in an interview with the Business Report, said that they are expecting an increase in domestic travel over the long Easter weekend. SA Tourism highlighted the Blue Train as one of the offerings to try over Easter.
Mashoto Mokgethi, the head of Domestic Tourism at SA Tourism, said that domestic travel tends to increase ahead of Easter in South Africa because the period carries deep cultural, religious, and social significance for many people across the country.
“Easter is a time when families and communities come together to celebrate through faith gatherings, shared meals, and cultural traditions, which naturally encourages people to travel to reconnect with loved ones,” Mokgethi said.
Another major driver is the holiday calendar.
“South Africa typically observes three public holidays over the Easter weekend, combined with a two-week school break. This extended time off gives families the opportunity to take trips, which leads to a noticeable increase in road travel to different parts of the country,” she said.
Road trips remain one of the most popular and cost-effective ways to travel, particularly for families or groups.
“Travelling by car allows people to explore the country at their own pace, enjoy South Africa’s breathtaking landscapes, and connect with nature. It also creates opportunities to stop in smaller towns and interact with local communities along the way, making the journey itself part of the Easter experience,” Mokgethi said.
Mokgethi added that one of the most exciting offerings that travellers can make use of is The Blue Train, saying, “The Blue Train is one of South Africa’s most iconic luxury rail experiences, offering travellers a unique way to explore the country while enjoying world-class comfort and service. The train journeys approximately 1,600 kilometres between Tshwane and Cape Town, with memorable stopovers in Kimberley and Matjiesfontein.”
Mokgethi said that along the way, the train travels through four provinces, showcasing South Africa’s diverse landscapes, countryside, and historic towns.
Mokgethi said that affordable and accessible travel options this Easter are becoming more visible as the tourism sector works to challenge the perception that travel is only for those with large budgets.
“One of the key barriers to domestic travel has been the belief that it is expensive or difficult to access. Because of this, there is a growing effort to provide information that not only highlights affordable deals but also inspires South Africans to rediscover the joy of travelling during the Easter weekend,” she said.
Mokgethi added that safety should always be a top priority for anyone travelling during the Easter period.
“As more South Africans take advantage of the long weekend and school holidays, it’s important to plan ahead and follow responsible travel practices to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Travellers are encouraged to stay informed and make use of trusted travel resources such as Shotleft.co.za. The platform not only highlights affordable travel opportunities but also provides useful guidance to help travellers plan their trips responsibly and safely,” she said.
Mokgethi said that there is also a strong focus on educating travellers about practical safety measures.
“This includes booking through trusted platforms, being mindful of potential cybercrime when making online travel payments, and ensuring that accommodation and travel deals are verified. By taking these precautions, travellers can avoid common scams and travel with greater peace of mind,” she said.
Mokgethi added that these efforts align with the work being done by the South African Department of Tourism to promote safe and responsible travel across the country.
“By encouraging travellers to plan wisely and stay informed, the tourism sector aims to ensure that everyone can enjoy their Easter getaways safely while exploring the many destinations South Africa has to offer,” she said.
