Whoever said I dop is a chop

Trevor Gumbi Trevor Gumbi

Trevor Gumbi is such a madcap performer, you’d be forgiven for thinking he was on something. Just not by him.

Gumbi lashed out at a Drum magazine report that he was intoxicated at an event over the weekend.

The comedian, who popularised the phrase “Are you Free, or are you Dom” in an advert a few years back, called the story “stupid”.

The report alleged that Gumbi had dissapeared from an event in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, and when he returned to the stage several hours later, he was far too drunk to perform. Gumbi, who was the MC for the Black & Gold Africa All in One Experience, denied the claim.

“I wasn't drunk and whoever said I was, better take me for a blood test because it's nonsense. It's stupid and I would love to find out who said that about me,” Gumbi said. Err, it’s a bit late in the day for that drug test Trevor, but nice try.

Gumbi went on to admit that while he does enjoy the occasional drink, he was definitely sober on stage.

“If I had done anything wrong, I would have owned up to it. I'm a big boy now. But the truth is; I didn't anything wrong and the promoters even called me to thank me for doing an amazing job. So, I have no idea where this all comes from.''

Gumbi has battled drug addiction in the past, and accepts that people will forever gossip about him because of it.

“To be honest, I'm not really concerned. The rumours don't change anything. Of course, the public perceptions of me are important but when it comes to rumours, I couldn't be bothered,” he said.
