“Acting became the outlet that allowed me to express myself and tell stories after a difficult period in my life,” said Santonio Govender, reflecting on the path that led him into performance.

The actor’s journey into the industry began after he faced a major health challenge while battling Ulcerative Colitis. During that period, he learned about resilience and self-expression.

As his health improved, he began searching for creative spaces where he could connect with people through storytelling. That search eventually led him to acting.

Govender joined the LX Seth Academy to begin formal training and develop his craft. “Once I joined the academy, the journey started opening up slowly through training, adverts, short films and working with other creatives,” he said.

The environment allowed him to gain experience while learning how productions function behind the scenes. It also introduced him to a community of filmmakers and actors who shared a passion for storytelling.

For Govender, training with the academy has been one of the defining moments in his growth as a performer.

“Being surrounded by passionate film-makers and actors pushes you to keep improving,” he explained. “You learn a lot by watching others work and by being part of projects that challenge you.”

His work has already included appearances in cinema adverts with Nu Metro Cinemas as well as roles in short films and collaborative productions. Govender also has a supporting role in the upcoming film “Highway Sheila 2: Verma and Shambies”.

“Each opportunity teaches you something new about discipline and presence on screen,” he said. “You learn how to trust the process and how to bring honesty into every scene.”

Looking back at his journey so far, Govender said that the achievement he values most is simply reaching the point where he can stand on set and work alongside other creatives.

“There was a time when my health challenges made it difficult to imagine pursuing something as demanding as acting,” he said. “Being able to collaborate with talented people and see a project come to life is something I am very grateful for.”

Govender now takes on the role of the lead antagonist, known as The Wolf, in the student short film “Wolf’s Bane”.

The story follows a family whose lives change when a mysterious man arrives at their door, triggering a chain of events shaped by debt and desperation.

“What drew me to The Wolf was the complexity behind him,” Govender explained. “He is not just a villain. He represents power, control and the darker consequences of desperation.”

To build character, Govender focused on restraint and presence.

“Sometimes the calmest character in the room can be the most intimidating,” he said. “I wanted the audience to feel that danger even before the character does anything.”

He also drew inspiration from professional wrestling star Randy Orton. “I am a huge wrestling fan, and I looked at Randy Orton’s methodical and calculating character traits,” he said.

“The way he moves feels deliberate and controlled. I wanted The Wolf to carry that same quiet intimidation.”

Beyond acting in the film, Govender also played a role in shaping the project creatively. He co-wrote the story and assisted with producing and adapting the screenplay for the final production.

“Being involved in the writing and production side gave me a deeper understanding of the story,” he said.

“On a student production, everyone works closely together and supports each other creatively.”

If “Wolf’s Bane" were expanded into a full feature film, Govender said that he would like to explore the origins of his character.

“I would love to explore the psychology behind The Wolf and understand what shaped him,” he said.

“That would add more layers to the story and deepen the impact of the events that unfold.”
