A sense of shock spread through the music world after news broke of a shooting involving Offset outside a Florida hotel and casino.

As details began to emerge, another name quickly drew attention, raising questions about who he is and his connection to the incident.

Lil Tjay, born Tione Jayden Merritt, is a 24-year-old American rapper from the Bronx in New York. He rose to prominence with a melodic approach to drill music, blending rap with emotional themes drawn from his upbringing.

His breakout success came with songs such as “Calling My Phone” and “Resume”, which helped him build a strong following at a young age.

His career has also been marked by resilience after he survived a near-fatal shooting in 2022, an event that shaped both his public image and his music.

Authorities say Tjay was arrested and charged in connection with an incident that took place on Monday night at a valet area outside the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida.

Police reported that Offset, whose real name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus, was shot at about 7pm in the same area. He was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

According to arrest records, Tjay was booked into the Broward County Jail on a disorderly conduct charge and held on a five-hundred-dollar bond on Tuesday morning.

His lawyer, Dawn M Florio, rejected claims linking him to the shooting.

In a statement, she said that her client had not been shot and had not been charged with any shooting, adding that reports suggesting otherwise were false and based on rumours.

“Lil Tjay has not been shot, nor has Lil Tjay been charged with any shooting. Any reporting to the contrary is false. We encourage people to consult trusted news sources, and to verify the accuracy of any reporting, before reflexively sharing or repeating baseless rumours,” said Florio.

Police spokesperson Gary Bitney told publications that the situation began as a fight and confirmed that another person was detained at the scene, but has not been charged.

He also said that the investigation is ongoing as officers work to identify additional people who may have been involved.

The connection between Tjay and Offset has drawn further attention due to their shared history. The two previously collaborated on music in 2021 but later became involved in a public dispute.

Last year, Tjay accused Offset of failing to repay a ten-thousand-dollar loan linked to gambling, leading to heated exchanges on social media.

Their relationship has since been strained, adding another layer of interest to the current investigation as authorities continue to determine what happened.
