“Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember,” said Niharika Singh, whose debut album “Kali Asthanam" is introducing audiences to her spiritual and cultural journey through music.
Raised in Umkomaas in KwaZulu Natal, Singh said that her upbringing played a major role in shaping both her music and values.
Growing up around ashrams, temples and satsangs helped her develop a strong connection to devotional music from a young age.
“I regularly attended local ashrams and temples, where I developed a deep love for devotional music. I especially enjoyed Sunday satsangs where I had the opportunity to sing many bhajans,” she explained.
Singh said that her family’s support encouraged her to pursue music seriously. Her parents, who are both musicians and vocalists, inspired her to improve her craft and embrace the world of devotional performance.
She said that taking part in Sri Sathya Sai Balvikas and attending Hindi school also strengthened her connection to culture, discipline and spirituality.
Music became more serious for Singh when her family launched K and N Bhajan and Kirtan. As bookings and live performances increased, she became more determined to grow as a singer and performer.
“My greatest musical influences are my parents. Growing up, I was fortunate to meet many talented artists through them and their guidance motivated me to pursue the same path,” she said.
At just 18-years-old, Singh has already achieved one of her lifelong dreams with the release of her debut album. The project holds deep spiritual meaning for the young artist.
“Kali refers to the goddess to whom I am deeply devoted, while Asthanam means a royal court or throne. Together, the title represents a sacred and devotional offering to Mother Kali,” she explained.
Her sound blends the rhythms of chutney and Nagara music with spiritual themes and devotional lyrics. Singh said that her goal is to create music that uplifts listeners while remaining rooted in faith and culture.
Despite her achievements, Singh’s journey has not been without challenges. During her school years, she faced health struggles related to Covid-19 which forced her to complete her final years of school online.
“These experiences taught me resilience and strengthened my determination to keep pursuing my dreams,” she said.
Outside music, Singh said that she is focused on healing, reflection and personal growth. She believes that these experiences continue to shape her outlook on life and inspire her music.
Looking ahead, the singer hopes to expand her reach and continue using devotional music to preserve culture and inspire young people.
“I want to keep learning, improving and using my music to preserve and celebrate our culture and heritage for future generations,” she said.
Singh also thanked her supporters, family, musicians and Lotus FM for supporting her musical journey and helping bring her debut album to life.
