Durban’s theatre scene places a strong focus on musical comedy and Valentine's-themed performances this week. Here are a few events taking place.

Private Presley - The Ballet

Choreographed by Sean Bovim, "Private Presley - The Ballet" stars international dancer Jorge Wade as Elvis and Prima Ballerina Angela Revie as Priscilla.

The performance delves into the King of Rock and Roll’s complex life, focusing on his military service, fame and influential relationships.

Featuring local talent and vibrant costumes by David Hutt, this emotionally charged tribute blends athleticism with grace to explore the legend's triumphs and tribulations.

"Doing Sean Bovim's 'Private Presley' has been a privilege, and it is a wonderful addition to the Mzansi Ballet repertoire," says Dirk Badenhorst, director of Mzansi Ballet.

Where: The Milkwood Theatre, Danville Park Girls' High School.

When: Friday to Sunday.

Bump & Grind

Durban’s favourite husband and wife comedy duo, Aaron McIlroy and Lisa Bobbert, return with a brand-new musical comedy.

The show features a mix of new characters and old favourites, like the "Elvis impersonators" and "Dr Veejay", all set to a high-energy soundtrack.

"Bump & Grind" is directed by Daisy Spencer.

Where: Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo.

When: Friday to Sunday. Show times vary.

Empowering Voices

If you are looking for something more thought-provoking, this production explores the lived experiences of disabled high school learners. It is a compelling piece that uses honest storytelling to advocate for inclusion and empathy.

Directed by Thabo Mnguni, this is a powerful "theatre-in-education" style piece that bridges the gap between performance and social advocacy.

Where: The Playhouse, Durban central.

When: Currently on until February 20.
