Darrel Rhyce Govender, 31, and Melissa Govender, 29, are the co-owners and creative team behind Obsessive Cupcake Disorder (OCD), a renowned baking business based in Malvern in Durban.

With over a decade of experience in the baking industry, they have transformed their passion for baking into an art form that tells a story through their exquisite cakes.

Darrel and Melissa have been in the baking industry for just over ten years.

What began as a small home project blossomed into a shared passion that exceeded their wildest expectations.

Darrel is captivated by the science and precision of baking, focusing on perfecting textures, flavours, and fillings.

Meanwhile, Melissa has found her niche in the art of decorating and design. Together, they have discovered that cakes can be more than just desserts; they can be edible art.

Every cake they create has a unique story, but the couple is particularly proud of their large-scale, luxury-themed custom cakes for weddings and special events.

These projects challenge their creativity and teamwork.

One standout creation was a couture-inspired wedding cake, where every detail, from the structure to the hand-painted elements, came together flawlessly, showcasing Darrel’s precision and Melissa’s artistic vision.

According to the couple, launching Obsessive Cupcake Disorder with a focus on bold and unconventional designs was a significant risk.

They aimed to break away from traditional styles and create cakes that are modern, daring, and expressive.

This approach paid off, as clients began seeking them out for their unique offerings.

These creative risks have helped shape OCD’s identity as a brand that celebrates innovation and artistry.

The couple revealed that the joy of creation fuels their passion for baking.

Each day presents new challenges, designs, and client stories.

Knowing that their cakes play a role in people’s most significant milestones - such as weddings and birthdays - serves as a powerful motivation.

They admit that the priceless reactions from clients when they see their cakes for the first time are what keep them inspired.

The couple reveals that one common misconception about their work is that it is all glamorous and effortless.

"Behind every perfect cake is late nights, long hours, and a lot of problem-solving. People also sometimes think it’s just one of us doing everything, but OCD truly works because of teamwork," they share.

Darrel handles all the baking and fillings, and Melissa brings the vision to life through art and design.

The couple also notes that social media has been a vital tool for their business, allowing them to connect with a broader audience.

"It’s allowed us to share our work, our story, and our process with people far beyond Durban. We’ve built amazing relationships, gained clients, and inspired others to pursue their own creative paths - all through platforms like Instagram. It’s been the bridge between our passion and the people who appreciate it," they say.

When it comes to life in Durban, the couple notes that Durban is a city filled with warmth, not just in its climate but also in its people.

"There’s a special kind of creativity and culture here. The food scene is incredible, and the sense of community always shines through. We’d tell anyone visiting to come hungry and curious -Durban has flavour in every form!"

When it comes to travel, Thailand is their top choice.

"The food, the culture, and the people are incredible. Every trip there leaves us inspired - from the street food flavours to the vibrant colours and artistry in everything they do. It’s a place that constantly reminds us why creativity and passion go hand in hand."

Looking ahead to 2025, Darrel and Melissa are excited about expanding their Taster Box experience, collaborating with local creatives, and hosting exclusive cake art workshops.

They aim to share their knowledge with aspiring bakers and decorators while working on bold, concept-driven cake collections that merge fine art with flavour.

For those wanting to enter the world of baking, Darrel and Melissa offer this advice: "Start small, stay consistent, and lead with passion. Baking and decorating are skills that take time to master - it’s a journey of patience, trial, and creativity.

"Don’t compare your Chapter 1 to someone else’s Chapter 10. Most importantly, never lose sight of why you started - when you create from the heart, it always shows."
