In the glittering world of South African high fashion, few names shine as brightly as Gert-Johan Coetzee.
Known affectionately as the "King of Couture", Coetzee has spent years defining local glamour, dressing every Mzansi A-lister imaginable, from Bonang Matheba and Minnie Dlamini to Somizi Mhlongo, and making significant waves internationally, draping Hollywood stars like Chloe Bailey and Skai Jackson.
His creations are more than garments; they are events in themselves, synonymous with a high-octane, relentless pursuit of perfection.
However, the man behind the meticulously beaded gowns and dramatic trains recently shared that he has taken time off to focus on his health and well-being.
In December, Coetzee underwent a 12-hour brain operation at Netcare Milpark Hospital to remove a rare benign tumor that was pressing against his brain stem.
The tumor was discovered after he noticed troubling symptoms like hearing loss, imbalance and blurred vision.
Led by neurosurgeon Professor Christos Profyris, the complex surgery successfully removed about 95% of the tumor.
While he is currently experiencing temporary facial paralysis, doctors expect a full recovery in the coming months.
Taking to social media, Coetzee shared a candid and introspective statement about his recovery.
"Over the past few weeks, I have taken some time away from my usual schedule to focus on my health and wellbeing," he wrote.
"This period has offered a moment for rest and reflection, and I am deeply grateful for the exceptional care and support I have received. The studio continues its work as we prepare for an exciting season ahead, and I look forward to sharing what we have been creating with you."
"Thank you for your continued support," noted Coetzee.
Despite the intensity of the diagnosis, the designer remains optimistic.
In a recent interview, he shared how the experience changed his perspective.
“The time away from work has given me the unexpected gift of inner reflection. Moments like this remind you very quickly what matters in life.”
Coetzee added, “What surprised me most was discovering how calm I felt once the reality of the situation set in. I quickly realised that fear doesn’t help you move forward.”
