Lizzo has given the world enough fire anthems to power a small city but apparently her sex life was still classified top secret… until now.
The singer made a very specific deal with herself: no sex until she won a Grammy. Because priorities, obviously. The Grammy-winning singer revealed on the "Friends Keep Secrets" podcast that she didn’t lose her virginity until 2020, well into her 30s.
“I was a late bloomer,” Lizzo, 37, admitted. “I lied about it for a long time.”
After sweeping the 2020 Grammys, winning Best Pop Best Solo Performance, Best Traditional R&B Performance and Best Urban Contemporary Album, Lizzo finally made good on that promise. She clarified it wasn’t literally the night of the Grammys but that year, the deal was done.
The story gets funnier when she explains the chaos of teenage honesty. “It was so embarrassing,” Lizzo laughed.
“I was in a friend group of girls and we were all girling one night… and it was like, ‘Wait, Lizzo, are you a virgin?’ I said, ‘I love the D.’ And that held me over for a little while.” Only Lizzo could drop that line and make it somehow work.
Her church upbringing also played a role, with teenage pacts to keep things pure until marriage. Combine that with the nerves of being young and single and teen Lizzo found herself staring at a very quiet love life. “Nobody wanted to kiss me,” she admitted.
First kisses didn’t come easy either. Her first kiss was at 21 and, as she puts it, “terrible.” Forced at a New Year’s Eve party, it left her furious: “My first kiss is ruined.” Ouch, but at least it makes for a great story now. Teenage Lizzo got played, but hey, bad kisses build character… and podcast stories decades later.
Lizzo’s present-day love life is on her own terms, shared with boyfriend Myke Wright, who she’s been dating since 2022. “I don’t like tonguing or swopping of spit,” she confessed. “The only person I like it with is my man. I can’t stand it with anyone else.” We feel that. Only one VIP pass for the spit zone.
Lizzo’s story is hilarious and totally relatable. She’s proof that love, sex and firsts don’t have an expiry date and when you finally do it your way, it’s about damn time.
