A fire at a polystyrene manufacturing factory in Tongaat, north of Durban, has left 12 people injured.

Netcare911 paramedics said five animals were also saved in the incident which happened at about 3pm on Wednesday.

Spokesman Chris Botha said about 16 firefighters were needed to bring the inferno under control. The exact cause of the fire had yet to be determined.

Botha added that during their rescue, one of the paramedics and a fireman found two dogs and three cats trapped “in an alley between a block of flats and the burning factory”

“Enormous heat from the fire melted the guttering on the block of flats and made the rescue of the two dogs and three cats difficult.”

He said the fire did not spread into the residential flats alongside the factory. None of the occupants of the flats were harmed.

Meanwhile the factory workers were treated for smoke inhalation and released. - IOL
