Hawks boss not under investigation

Hawks boss Major-General Johan Booysen is not facing imminent arrest.

Conspicuous by his absence when his troops were in the dock last week, Booysen is expected to return to work tomorrow after a trip overseas.

Although the Sunday Tribune has been reliably informed that Booysen was due to be arrested and charged with racketeering, Hawks spokesman McIntosh Polela was adamant this week that this would not happen.

“Whoever is saying that is talking nonsense,” he said. “We haven’t even started any investigation…”

Polela sought to point out that, contrary to popular belief, Booysen was not the sole head of the disbanded Cato Manor organised crime unit, as he reported to three members of police management above him.

This “confusion” arose out of misinformation by the media, he said.

Reacting to the laying of charges against Booysen, Polela said: “No racketeering charges are being investigated at the moment.”

The Tribune also approached National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga for comment. He was ambiguous, saying that only the 18 officers currently out on bail were part of the State’s case.

But he intimated that the door was still open for others to be charged.

Booysen could not be reached for comment yesterday.
