An elderly man fell victim to a brazen robbery in the Verulam CBD on Wednesday afternoon when three armed suspects held him at knifepoint and stole a frozen chicken he had just purchased.
According to Prem Balram, spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the visibly shaken victim sought assistance at RUSA headquarters shortly before 5pm.
“The man reported that he was walking along Todd Street shortly after purchasing a frozen chicken from a nearby supermarket when three suspects confronted him. One of them brandished a knife and threatened to stab him,” Balram said.
In a terrifying ordeal, the suspects forced the elderly man to the ground, warning him not to move. Overcome by fear, he remained on the ground for approximately ten minutes even after the assailants had fled with his purchase.
South African Police Service (SAPS) KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said over 11 000 suspects were arrested last month, with law enforcement recovering 626 dangerous weapons—including knives, axes, and machetes—as well as 287 firearms.
The arrests included a variety of serious crimes, including robbery, assault, attempted murder, murder, and rape.
