THE PROVINCIAL Disaster Management Centre is on high alert for potential flooding in low-lying areas and possible damage to infrastructure after the fifth sluice gate of the Vaal Dam was opened on April 6.

Northern Cape Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) spokesperson Tebogo Monyo cautioned that areas near the riverbanks could flood due to the increased water releases.

"This will affect infrastructure built in lower-lying areas within 100 metres of the flood line. The Department of Water and Sanitation is continuously monitoring the water levels in the Vaal River System," he said.

The MEC for Coghsta, Bentley Vass, discouraged the public from engaging in any activity in the river, including traditional rituals such as baptisms, swimming and fishing, or crossing rivers on foot or by vehicle via submerged bridges.

“We have engaged all five district Disaster Management Centres across the Province to submit situational reports to the Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC), should the need arise for immediate intervention and the mobilisation of resources. The PDMC is on standby to provide any support," he added.
