KwaZulu-Natal chess star Jorah Soojay made history by clinching first place in the under 17 division at the 2025 African Schools Individual Chess Championship and achieved a flawless 9 out of 9 score.
Jorah, 16, represented South Africa at the competition which took place in Kenya. The Grade 11 learner at Ashton International College in Ballito will return home on Sunday.
Chess South Africa, in a statement, said they were elated to announce a momentous achievement.
"Young chess sensation Jorah Soojay has made history by clinching first place at the African Schools Individual Chess Championships (U17) — and not just by winning, but by achieving a flawless 9 out of 9 score.
The only player across all age groups and categories to do so.
"Out of 1 109 participants from across the continent, Jorah’s performance stood out as nothing short of exceptional."
The event concluded with resounding praise from the organisers and fellow competitors, who openly acknowledged Jorah’s feat and hailed South Africa and Jorah as the only ones to reach perfection on the scoreboard, added Chess South Africa.
"Chess South Africa Salutes You, Jorah. Your success brings immense pride and joy to the entire chess community and the nation at large. You have become a role model to young South Africans, proving that hard work, discipline, and passion can lead to greatness.
"Your performance lifts the spirit of chess in South Africa and inspires the next generation of champions. We are beyond proud and excited for your future," said Chess South Africa.
Jorah said winning every game and securing the African Schools Chess Championship 2025 title was an incredible achievement.
"It fills me with immense gratitude and pride. Scoring a perfect 9/9 throughout the tournament is something truly special, and it reinforces my belief that perseverance, preparation, and faith lead to success.
"This victory was not without challenges. On the second day, I fell ill with a terrible flu, which made competing even harder. But despite feeling physically drained, I pushed through, stayed focused, and gave my absolute best in every match. This experience reminded me that true strength is not just about skill but about resilience in the face of adversity," he said.
Jorah said the competition was intense and that his opponents played exceptionally well.
"Every game was a battle, and I had to stay sharp, think ahead, and adjust my strategies. Some matches were particularly challenging, reminding me to never underestimate anyone.
"My games lasted as long as 5 hours and 12 minutes, demanding deep focus, endurance, and mental strength. It was a test of patience and perseverance, but beyond the competition, it was an amazing experience. I got to play against talented individuals from across Africa and learnt from each encounter," said Jorah.
He said he was blessed to have earned his provisional FM (FIDE Master) title, marking a significant milestone in his chess journey.
Jorah thanked his parents, Rajan and Joanne, and brother, Josiah, for their support and belief in him.He started playing chess at the age of 7 when he was inspired by a friend at school who was winning trophies and medals.
Jorah has since played in international tournaments in a number of countries such as Zambia, Kenya, India, Namibia, Romania and Azerbaijan.
"Chess has been a huge part of my life, but as school has taken priority, I don’t get to play as often as I used to. When I was younger, I spent countless hours refining my skills, analysing games, and embracing the beauty of every move.
"Now, while my playing time may have reduced, my passion remains just as strong. Chess has taught me how to manage time effectively, anticipate consequences before making decisions, and handle pressure with composure. Chess isn’t just played on the board, it shapes the way I approach every challenge I face," he said.
His dad, Rajan, who is Jorah's mentor and coach, said Jorah’s victory was undeniably remarkable.
"As his father, I have had the privilege of not only raising him but mentoring and guiding him through life’s challenges.
"I have always believed in discipline, faith, and trusting in God, values that have shaped Jorah’s mindset, fostering resilience and humility. While he executes his strategy on the chessboard, the foundation of his success was laid in his upbringing, one built on wisdom, order, and an unwavering commitment to faith," said Rajan.
