THE Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry is poised for another round of elections to select its final board member after the first initiative on 24 July ended in an unprecedented stalemate. This follow-up election, set for Friday at the chamber's office, highlights the importance of completing the eight-member board, which plays a crucial role in steering the organisation's goals and initiatives for the local business community.
In July 24, voters faced a unique challenge when four candidates received an equal number of votes, leaving the chamber with a tie that necessitated a second round of elections.
The nominees are a diverse group of professionals, each bringing unique experiences and perspectives to the table. They include:
Tozi Mthethwa: An executive at Ithala Development Finance Corporation, Mthethwa is known for her strategic insight into public relations and marketing, financial development, and community upliftment.
Kim Macllwaine: Currently a board member and affiliated with Distil Consulting, Macllwaine has experience in the consultancy sector.
Hans Modipane: An executive at South African Cargo Services (Pty) Ltd, Modipane’s background in logistics and supply chain management adds to the board’s operational expertise.
Willie Coetsee: A specialist at Transnet, Coetsee has substantial experience in rail and freight, essential for addressing the growing mobility and transport needs of Durban’s growing business landscape.
The first round of elections successfully concluded with seven members elected to the board. As these candidates take their places, the attention now turns to the final appointment that could influence the chamber’s strategic direction for years to come.
As the board prepares to welcome a new member, the outcome of this election is considered crucial for the chamber's ability to foster economic growth and support its members.
With the competitive spirit ignited, all eyes will be on the chamber’s office this Friday, where business leaders and stakeholders await the announcement of the new board member.
