LOCAL community organisations are rekindling hope and unity through their annual hamper distribution efforts to mark the occasion of Diwali.
Various dedicated groups have mobilised to extend a helping hand to underprivileged families by providing a meal and a grocery hamper.
Leaesh Maharaj, secretary of the Rydalvale Ramayan Mundalee in Phoenix, said they distributed 50 hampers to underprivileged families in their local community.
The temple organisation made an appeal for donations and sponsors to contribute towards their hampers, valued at R200 each.
"A number of people, from elderly to unemployed, had seen our flyer and reached out to us to help them with a food hamper.
"We saw the desperation and need for the food hampers. We didn't see race and religion, but distributed to people in need," said Maharaj.
Seva Hands, a non-profit organisation has held their 7th annual Diwali hamper drive.
Aneshnee Yegambram, of Seva Hands, said they had made an appeal for R300 to sponsor a hamper that will bring joy and sustenance to a family of four.
"This year we distributed 150 hampers, compared to the 300 in previous years. Due to limited finances, we didn't overextend. It has been a challenging year in terms of funding and sponsorships
"Our diverse group of hamper recipients were from Asherville and Clare Estate. Last week at the David Landau hall in Asherville we distributed the hampers after providing a hot meal. We also had a pop-up shop with pre-loved clothing. Those who received the hampers could also select three items from the shop," she said.
Yegambram said it wasn't just about giving a hamper, but preserving people's dignity.
Vasen Pillay, chairperson of Triggers for Hope, said they distributed 60 hampers that could supplement a family of four for about a week.
"We distributed to families in dire need in Phoenix, Chatsworth, Verulam, Merebank. The hampers contained oil, flour, rice, beans, dhal, noodles, salt, spices, canned items, biscuits and sweets.
"During the year we are involved in other hamper drives and helping communities in times of need," said Pillay.
