A public-private partnership between eThekwini Municipality and the Newbridge Graduate Institute is helping young entrepreneurs turn their small enterprises into sustainable businesses.

The collaboration was born out of the North Regional Durban Business Fair empowerment sessions held earlier this year, where 15 emerging business owners were awarded bursaries to study Business Administration at Newbridge.

The bursary recipients, selected after pitching their business ideas to a judging panel, are now pursuing an 18-month Higher Certificate in Business Administration (NQF Level 5). The course began in August and runs until February 2027.

Classes are held three times a week at Newbridge’s Highway Campus in Pinetown, while students also apply what they learn through practical training in their own businesses.

For 24-year-old Lungelo Gwala, founder of Miss Elle Bakery in KwaMashu, the course has been a game-changer.

“This programme is teaching me how to be unique and successful in the competitive bakery industry,” she said.

Another participant, Thobani Gumede, 23, who runs Thumu Dane Deliveries, said the lessons have already helped him expand his business outlook.

“I’m already implementing marketing strategies that I’ve learnt, and I’m exploring funding to acquire another motorbike. Attending the Durban Business Fair and participating in the business pitch changed my business journey completely.”

Nathi Ndlovu, Stakeholder Relations Manager at Newbridge Graduate Institute, said the initiative demonstrates the power of collaboration in developing entrepreneurial talent.

“This programme equips learners with the knowledge and skills to run sustainable, profitable businesses,” he said.

Councillor Thembo Ntuli who is the Chairperson of the City’s Economic Development and Planning said the partnership reflected the municipality’s commitment to supporting youth and small businesses.

“By applying their newly acquired skills and knowledge, these emerging business owners are well on their way to success. This is precisely why we forge such partnerships, to drive business development that leads to job creation and inclusive economic growth.”

The programme forms part of eThekwini’s ongoing efforts to strengthen local enterprise, build capacity, and promote entrepreneurship as a key driver of the city’s economic future.
