A 51-year-old taxi owner was shot and killed in a brazen early morning attack in Waterloo, north of Durban, on Friday.
The incident occurred at the corner of Python Road and Pricklepear Road just before 7am.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokesperson Prem Balram said officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 06:51 following reports of a shooting.
“On arrival, Reaction Officers found members of the Verulam SAPS already in attendance. Witnesses stated that the victim had been standing on the corner, waiting to be picked up, when two unknown suspects approached him on foot and opened fire,” said Balram.
Balram continued to say that the man sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his face, head, shoulders and back. Several 9mm spent cartridges were recovered at the scene.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and while it is believed the suspects fled on foot, this has not been confirmed.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza confirmed that Verulam SAPS had opened a case of murder.
Police investigations are ongoing.
