A POLICE operation in Emanguzi ended in a deadly shootout on Sunday, leaving three suspects dead and three others injured.

According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda, the officers were tracing suspects linked to three murders that took place in Emanguzi in 2023 and another killing in Ingwavuma in October.

Acting on information, police moved in on the suspects in the Phelandaba and upon arrival they were met with gunfire.

“To protect themselves and other innocent residents, police returned fire and a shootout ensued," said Netshiunda.

Netshiunda revealed that during the shootout, two suspects were killed on the scene. Four others were rushed to a nearby health facility, where one was declared dead on arrival.

Police recovered two firearms from the suspects. One had a partially filed-off serial number. The other was a police-issued firearm reported lost in Newlands East in 2009. Records show it was recovered in 2010 at Nhlanhleni police station, raising questions about how it resurfaced in the hands of criminals.

Netshiunda said investigations were under way to determine how the weapon changed hands again.

“Those who will be found to be responsible for negligence or any act of criminality will face the full might if the law," he said.
