A 35-year-old man has been arrested in Verulam, north of Durban, after a high-speed chase involving a stolen vehicle, a shootout with security guards, the recovery of two rifles and over 160 rounds of ammunition.

According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, the drama unfolded around 11am on Tuesday when a vehicle tracking company picked up the signal of a stolen car leaving uMlazi and heading north on the N2.

“A security company attempted to stop the vehicle in Verulam. However, one of the occupants in the stolen vehicle fired shots with a rifle at the security guards and injured one guard on the leg,” Magwaza said.

Magwaza added that the suspects continued to flee but were intercepted at Clerence Park by members of the Provincial Task Team and Durban K9 Unit.

He added that the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into the bush.

A search of the abandoned vehicle led to the recovery of a rifle and more than 100 rounds of ammunition. K9 officers pursued the suspects into the bush, where one man was arrested in possession of an AK47 assault rifle and 60 rounds of ammunition.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, December 3, facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of property suspected to be stolen.

Police confirmed that the search for the second suspect is ongoing.
