Local security company, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), received reports of over 1300 cases of missing people and animals, with the figures continuing to rise as the year approaches its end.
Prem Balram of RUSA said 889 individuals and 504 animals were reported missing to RUSA this year, until December 22.
"An average of 75 missing persons and 42 animals are reported monthly. Missing persons reports were received from families across South Africa, South Korea, USA, Europe, England, Zimbabwe, and India.
"The distressing situations in which those who have gone missing are found include jail, morgues, hospitals, and drug dens, while several remain unaccounted for. Runaway teenagers comprised a significant percentage of these statistics. The youngest that was reported to us as having run away was a nine-year-old," said Balram.
He said sadly some of those reported missing have still not been found.
The search for those reported missing is costly and resource-intensive, Balram emphasised, with many families desperately seeking closure or reunification. "Recovery efforts for lost animals, including dogs, cats, snakes, and goats, have been successful in various locations. However, some pets remain missing, with theft, negligence, and dog fighting rings cited as contributing factors," said Balram.
Dawn Gounden, of Renegades Search and Rescue, confirmed a significant influx of missing persons cases throughout the year, citing voluntary disappearances due to peer pressure, drug dependence, debts owed to loan sharks, and various domestic issues.
"The other issue is mental health issues, financial constraints, dementia and minors missing due to negligence by adults," said Gounden.
Renegades Search & Rescue is appealing to the public to remain vigilant during the festive season as it is a period when there is an influx in missing person reports, especially involving minors and vulnerable persons.
"Each year, the holidays bring an increase in travel throughout South Africa, crowded public spaces including malls, beaches, entertainment venues and family gatherings. Unfortunately, these same conditions create high risk environments where children can go missing within seconds, and adults may disappear due to stress, unsafe travel, crime, or alcohol related incidents.
"We urge all parents, caregivers, and community members to keep a constant eye on children at all times. Ensure that teenagers and adults share their location when travelling. Avoid walking alone at night or near isolated areas. Check in regularly with family and neighbours and report suspicious behaviour immediately and safeguard elderly family members and persons with special needs," said Renegades Search & Rescue in a statement.
They advised the public that there is no waiting period to report a missing person.
