IN a remarkable display of academic excellence, Ethan Naidoo completed his matric year at Ashton International College Ballito with an impressive 93.14% average, securing seven distinctions, including a perfect score in Mathematics.

His exceptional results have positioned him for a promising future, as he embarks on a journey into the world of actuarial science.

Initially drawn towards a career in engineering, Ethan found himself reoriented by an educational psychologist, who encouraged him to explore the domain of actuarial science.

"My interest is in the data analytics side of the analytical thinking that you need for actuarial science. I would like to get into an insurance company for my work experience," he said.

Naidoo, 18, from Palm Lakes Estates in Tinley Manor, boasted remarkable scores in the IEB exam: 100% in Maths, 99% in physics, 95% in accounting and information technology, 91% in Afrikaans, 88% in English and 84% in life orientation.

"The final results was after a lot of hard work and consistency. From the moment I could read I have been interested in Maths, particularly calculus and how it connects with the real world.

"I didn't even believe it was possible to get 100% in Maths. It was the first time that I got 100% as an end of year result. I was so surprised and shocked when my results were sent," he said.

For his first maths exam paper, he utilised just an hour and 15 minutes of the allotted three hours, while he completed the second paper within an hour and 30 minutes.

He advises current matric learners to "hang in there," acknowledging that the journey may be tough but reiterating that consistency and early preparation are crucial.

"Build a good work and study habit; it forms the foundation to help you keep up with the increased workload

Naidoo reflected on the supportive role his parents, dad Dr Elen Naidoo and mum Natasha, both of whom are in the medical field, have played in his academic journey.

He emphasised that they never pressured him, simply wanting him to do his best.
