The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature has strongly condemned death threats directed at Premier Thami Ntuli, warning that those responsible must be identified and held accountable.

In a statement released on Thursday, the party said the threats, which are circulating openly on social media and explicitly call for the Premier’s death, amount to reckless incitement to violence and a direct attack on democratic governance.

The IFP said it was deeply concerned that the threats have surfaced at a time when Ntuli has been receiving national praise, particularly following KwaZulu-Natal’s top performance in the 2025 matric results. The province recently emerged as the best-performing province in the country, a result the party attributed to decisive leadership and accountability.

According to the IFP, Ntuli’s firm stance against corruption and maladministration has made him a target for individuals who fear scrutiny and accountability.

The party alleged that the Premier has become a “stumbling block” to those seeking to embezzle public funds under the guise of service delivery.

“The only ‘sin’ of the Premier is that he is a hardworking leader who delivers results and upholds integrity,” the statement said.

The party emphasised that death threats are criminal acts and not expressions of political opinion. It warned that anyone issuing or amplifying such threats must expect to be investigated and prosecuted.

Calling for zero tolerance for political intimidation, the IFP urged law enforcement and security agencies to launch an urgent, impartial and comprehensive investigation. It also confirmed that it has opened a criminal case and will conduct its own internal investigation to ensure accountability.

“These threats place the life of the Premier at risk and undermine the rule of law,” the party said, adding that Ntuli must be afforded the highest level of state protection.

IFP Chief Whip in the KZN Legislature and national chairperson, Blessed Gwala, said those responsible must be exposed, including anyone who may have instructed, encouraged or supported the threats.

The party issued a clear warning that political violence would not be allowed to take root in KwaZulu-Natal, insisting that there must be real consequences for those behind the threats.
