THE Durban community is in mourning following the death of Daniel Hill, a pupil at Westville Boys' High School, who passed away after a brief illness.

Tributes have been pouring in from friends, family, and former classmates, all remembering the young athlete's vibrant spirit and the positive impact he had on those around him.

Daniel, who died on January 17 after contracting the flu, was described by his former primary school, Deutsche Schule in Durban, as a "kind and playful spirit." The school expressed their sorrow in a heartfelt tribute.

"A superb athlete, Daniel excelled in sport and was especially gifted as a swimmer," said the school.

They added that he would be remembered for his warmth, energy, and the lasting impression he left on everyone he encountered.

His father, Clinton Hill, took to social media to express his grief following his son's untimely passing.

"Fly with the angels, my boy,"

"You left us so suddenly, and we are numb and lost for words. I walked into the kitchen this morning and wanted to call you to pack away the clean dishes like you always did. Lulu keeps looking for you. I will never get over this and will keep you alive in our home forever," he added

Westville Boys' High School also shared a touching tribute, stating, "We received the devastating news of the loss of one of our Griffins. Daniel's passing has touched our school community deeply, and our hearts are heavy with sorrow. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and everyone whose life he touched. May his memory be a blessing, and may those who are grieving find comfort, strength, and support during this incredibly difficult time."

"We are truly blown away by all the support. Thank you to each and every one of you," Clinton said.

Deutsche Schule Durban, where Daniel attended primary school, also expressed their sympathies.

"Daniel was deeply loved by his peers, teachers, and families throughout our school community," they stated.

Teachers and pupils fondly remembered him not only for his academic journey but also for the gentle, playful way he connected with those around him, particularly the younger learners. During breaks, Daniel could often be found running across the playground, laughing as he played tag with smaller children who were instinctively drawn to his kindness.

Clinton Hill shared the family's ongoing struggle to come to terms with their loss, saying, "Taken away so quickly and so young. To think I will never see my boy again absolutely breaks me. He has touched so many hearts in his 14 years of living. We are going to miss him so much and cannot even think about life without him."

Daniel's funeral is set to be held at the Marianhill Monastery Church on Friday, January 30, as the community comes together to honour the life of a remarkable young man.
