The Labour and Civic Organisation (LACO) has dismissed its iLembe Region chairperson, Siyabonga Ntsika Zulu, following serious allegations of impropriety.

In a statement issued on Monday, LACO national spokesperson Mthobisi Shinga said Zulu’s expulsion from the organisation’s membership stemmed from unprofessional and unethical conduct, including prioritising personal gain and favours.

“This amounts to a transgression of LACO’s Constitution, specifically Section 3 on Members’ Obligations and Section 11 on the Code of Ethics and Conduct, and undermines the trust placed in you as a member,” the statement read.

LACO president Mlungisi Zondi reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to ethical leadership, saying it would not tolerate conduct that compromises its values.

“LACO is committed to protecting human and workers’ rights and promoting ethical behaviour in the handling of both civic and labour matters. We will not tolerate selfish conduct that brings our progressive movement into disrepute and compromises our values,” Zondi said.

The organisation noted that Zulu has the right to appeal the decision within 14 days to the LACO National Appeals Committee, in line with its disciplinary procedures and members’ code of conduct.

LACO, an affiliate of uMkhonto weSizwe Party, recently embarked on a mobilisation programme that led to the shutdown of several branches of the grilled chicken franchise Honchos across KwaZulu-Natal, following allegations that the company employed undocumented foreign nationals.

Zulu is alleged to have instructed the reopening of Honchos branches in the iLembe Region, claiming he was acting on a directive from the LACO president.

In a related development, LACO also expelled its eThekwini Region treasurer, Mpilo Zulu, after he admitted to accepting money for personal gain. He has similarly been granted the right to appeal his expulsion.
