Fujia Chen extradited to China from South Africa over R120 million fraud

A 63-year-old Chinese national is set to be extradited to China on Friday for allegedly defrauding the Chinese government of R120 million.
According to the South African Police Services (SAPS), Fujia Chen was handed over to a Chinese delegation by Interpol.
Police reported that Chen allegedly defrauded the Chinese government out of R120 million through an unregistered foreign currency exchange operation. He fled to South Africa in 2021 after his accomplices were arrested in China.
"He was hiding in South Africa up until he attempted to apply for a US visa," said national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
Following his visa application, Chen was arrested and has been in custody for the past six months.
"An extradition order was granted on January 20, 2026. He is on a flight back to China, where he will stand trial for crimes committed," Mathe stated.
In a recent meeting with the Chinese delegation, led by acting Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant General Khosi Senthumule, it was revealed that the police plan to arrest 18 more Chinese fugitives currently in South Africa.
"Eleven of these alleged criminals have been placed on Interpol's red notice."
