FLATFOOT Dance Company, KwaZulu-Natal’s iconic award winning African contemporary dance company, will be touring schools in the province.

Running from February 10 to April 30, 2026, the initiative titled "History is a Home Address," promises to weave the beauty of dance with the sharp poignancy of poetry through a newly crafted choreo-poem inspired by the evocative writings of acclaimed South African poet and cultural activist, Dr Mongane Wally Serote.

Schools in the province are invited to host the touring dance-theatre, that brings poetry, history and embodied learning into the classroom.

The production targets learners in Grades 8 to 12 and delves deep into the impactful legacy of one of South Africa’s most significant voices.

It prompts a critical inquiry relevant to today's youth: “Do the words of an anti-apartheid poet still resonate within contemporary South Africa, and how do young people carry history in their bodies today?”

Collaborated with choreographer Lliane Loots and the six dancers of the dance company, the choreo-poem draws on Serote’s iconic early anti-apartheid poems alongside his later writing.

Through movement, spoken word, and evocative physical theatre, the dancers explore personal and collective histories, asking what we remember, what we forget, and what continues to live on in our bodies and hearts.

The performance honours Serote’s profound contribution to South African culture while making his words accessible and relevant to a new generation.

Each school presentation will include a facilitated discussion post-performance, enabling learners to dive into critical conversations surrounding themes of history, identity, protest, and belonging alongside the dancers and choreographer.

Schools eager to be part of the experience have two pricing options available. The one-hour performance and discussion are priced at R35 per learner, while a more immersive two-hour package, which includes the performance, discussion, and an hour-long workshop, is offered at R50 per learner.

Schools interested in participating can email lootsl@ukzn.ac.za for bookings.
