KwaZulu-Natal Premier calls for urgent action following farmer's tragic death

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has called on police to escalate their efforts in tracking down the culprits behind the tragic death of north coast farmer, Aman Giyanshwar Roopsingh.
Roopsingh, 52, was attacked during a home invasion at his sugar farm in Riet Valley in Shakaskraal on January 30.
Roopsingh, together with his mum and uncle, were attacked. He succumbed to his injuries last week.
The attack has left the community reeling, raising serious concerns about safety in rural areas.
Ntuli has directed the provincial SAPS leadership to prioritise the investigation and apply all necessary resources to the case to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended swiftly and brought to justice
He described the killing as a grave and disturbing act of violence that constitutes an attack not only on an individual and his family, but on food security, rural livelihoods, and the social cohesion that binds communities together.
Ntuli highlighted that crimes against farming families undermine the stability of rural economies and pose risks to the collective well-being of society.
“The murder of Mr Roopsingh is a painful and unacceptable loss. It is an assault on the values of safety, coexistence and respect for human life that underpin our democracy. Attacks on those who produce food for the nation strike at the heart of our shared security and prosperity,” said Ntuli.
He noted the Roopsingh family’s longstanding contributions to agriculture and community life, making the loss even more profound for the residents of Riet Valley.
He stressed that crimes of this nature sow fear, division and instability, and must be confronted decisively by the state.
“Farm-related crimes will not be tolerated. This government remains firm in its commitment to protect rural communities, safeguard food production, and uphold the rule of law. Criminality, in whatever form, will not be allowed to erode social cohesion in KwaZulu-Natal,” said Ntuli.
He reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to strengthening rural safety strategies, enhancing police visibility, and deepening collaboration with farming communities, traditional leadership and community safety structures to prevent further incidents.
