RENOWNED radio personality, Alan Khan, has made a comeback on the airwaves, bringing his charm and charisma back to music-loving audiences.
Khan debuted his new show on Sunday, Sundays with Alan Khan, captivating listeners from 3pm to 7pm on Hot 102.7FM, a Johannesburg-based station that streams worldwide.
Residing in Morningside, Durban, Khan balances his passion for radio alongside his professional role as the senior director of Corporate Affairs at the Durban University of Technology.
He said being back on radio was exciting and nervous at the same time, but he loved it.
"Being on air was like coming home after a long journey. Presenting Sundays with Alan Khan on Hot 102.7FM is invigorating. It reminds me why I fell in love with radio in the first place. It’s just me and the person listening, sharing music, memories and moments. There’s an intimacy to radio that no other medium quite replicates. For me, it’s about connection. Always has been. Radio is the original social media.
"Being back behind the microphone feels joyful, humbling and exciting. I am extremely grateful that my wife Mariam and sons Nasser and Ameer support me on this journey. My employer DUT has also been amazing, encouraging me to do what I love. So, this chapter of my radio career is not about reinvention, it’s about reconnection," said Khan.
He said he was humbled by the feedback after the first show, from listeners all over the world.
Khan's new show is music driven with less talk and celebrates the Best Old Skool and R&B.
"I also share some interesting information about the artists, stories behind the songs and the musical moments that shaped them. It’s warm, reflective, nostalgic and happy. Sunday afternoons deserve that kind of mood. It’s a show where the music talks," said Khan.
Khan’s journey in radio spans an impressive 36 years, beginning with his tenure at Campus Radio at the then Technikon Natal. He went on to make his mark at prominent stations including Capital Radio, East Coast Radio, Jacaranda FM, and Lotus FM, where he last hosted a show called the Walk the Talk with Alan Khan back in March 2020.
"I enjoyed talk radio immensely and whilst I was at the SABC, I was blessed with some great memories. I was inducted into the South African Radio Hall of Fame in 2015 and two years later, in 2017, I was honoured to win the Best News and Actuality Talk Show at the South African Radio Awards.
"Radio has always been part of my DNA. And I love being back on music radio. I certainly have a romance with radio. What makes this chapter different is that I’m back behind the microphone. I’m not returning as an executive or strategist, I’m returning as a presenter," said Khan.
Khan also praised Hot 102.7FM, noting it as a station rooted in "authenticity, community and music that connects generations".
He acknowledged the achievements of the station’s founder and managing director, Lloyd Madurai, and expressed his gratitude towards the team for nurturing a respected radio environment. The station’s recent accolade as Station of the Year adds to the pride of his association.
"And what’s extra special for me on a deeply personal level is being entrusted with a Sunday afternoon show that was previously hosted by my friend and colleague, the late Darren Scott, who was a broadcaster I respected immensely and miss every day. This is one way of being close to him. Apart from the love of being back on air, it's extra special knowing it was Darren Scott's show," he said.
