Parliament calls for nominations to fill vacancy at South African Human Rights Commission

Nominations are open for the position of Commissioner of the South African Human Rights Commission.

The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development has called for nominations and applications for the appointment of a Commissioner to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

Committee Chairperson Xola Nqola said individuals and interested organisations are invited to nominate one suitable candidate. Applications from interested individuals will also be accepted.

Nqola said all shortlisted candidates’ curricula vitae (CVs) will be published on Parliament’s website to enable members of the public to comment on their suitability.

The SAHRC is mandated to promote respect for human rights and a culture of human rights, advance the protection, development and attainment of human rights, and monitor and assess the observance of human rights in South Africa.

According to Nqola, the Commission’s seat is in Gauteng. Nominees and applicants must be South African citizens and fit and proper persons to hold office, as contemplated in Section 193(1) of the Constitution. Candidates must also demonstrate a commitment to promoting respect for human rights and have relevant knowledge or experience related to the Commission’s mandate.

Applicants must comply with additional requirements prescribed by national legislation, particularly Section 5(b) of the South African Human Rights Commission Act, 2013 (Act No. 40 of 2013).

Nominations must include the full name and contact details of the individual or organisation making the nomination, along with the nominee’s signed acceptance. Applications must be accompanied by a covering letter detailing the applicant’s full name and contact information.

For both nominations and applications, candidates must submit a comprehensive CV including their full name, identity number, gender, contact details, relevant experience with dates and organisations, and academic and other qualifications.

Candidates will be subjected to suitability screening and verification of qualifications. Nominations / applications must be sent to Vhonani Ramaano, Committee Secretary by March 20 at 4pm.  Nominations and applications can be emailed to Sahrc@parliament.gov.za.
