Police arrest suspect linked to cash-in-transit robberies in Mariannhill joint operation

An unlicensed 9mm fiream with a serial number filed off, and twenty-one rounds of live ammunition were recovered at a house in Mbhedula, Mariannhill, where a suspect linked to cash-in-transit robberies was arrested.

A suspect allegedly linked to a string of cash-in-transit robberies has been arrested during a joint law-enforcement operation in Mbhedula, Mariannhill, west of Durban on Thursday.

The arrest was made during an intelligence-driven operation carried out by the Durban Metro Police Service tracing Unit in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS) Mariannhill Task Team, the SAPS Crime Prevention Unit and Crime Intelligence.

Authorities said officers acted on credible information provided by Crime Intelligence about a suspect believed to be involved in serious and violent crimes in the area.

The team tracked the suspect to a premises in the Mbhedula area just outside of Klaarwater, where a tactical operation was executed.

During the search, officers discovered the suspect in possession of an unlicensed 9mm firearm with a filed-off serial number. Police also recovered 21 rounds of live ammunition.

The suspect was immediately arrested and later detained at KwaNdengezi police station.

Police said investigations are continuing as authorities work to determine the suspect’s possible involvement in other crimes, including cash-in-transit robberies in the region.

Law-enforcement agencies said the successful operation demonstrated the importance of intelligence-led policing and collaboration between different units in tackling serious and violent crime in the eThekwini district.
