Mountview Secondary School in Verulam is appealing to its alumni and the community to donate a brick towards its hall project.
The school in Verulam needs 100,000 bricks to construct a new 1,000-seater hall for celebrating achievements and hosting cultural and academic events.
Meloshnee Pillay, deputy principal, said they have the foundation and have begun putting up the walls.
"As we receive funding it goes towards the building. We want to the celebrate the school's 50th anniversary with a grand jubilee dinner in September in our new hall.
"The construction of the school hall remains a top priority. Envisioned as a safe, structured, and multifunctional space, the hall will host assemblies, examinations, cultural programmes, and community engagements, significantly enriching the educational experience.
"The school recently embarked on phase 2 of the project, successfully laying the foundation of the hall. While this marks a major milestone, the project has now reached a critical stage. Urgent support is needed to move forward with the construction of the walls, particularly through the donation or sponsorship of bricks," said Pillay.
A brick costs R10.
Pillay said Mountview Secondary School stands as a proudly South African success story, where countless learners have overcome socio-economic barriers in their pursuit of excellence.
Established in 1976, the school currently has 1,156 learners.
As part of its Jubilee celebrations, a range of events have been planned throughout the year.
Indran Govender, the school's principal, said as they celebrate 50 years of excellence, they reflect with pride on how far they have come as a school and a community.
"Our motto, ‘Strive’, reminds us that no challenge is too great when we work together with determination and purpose. The construction of our school hall is more than just a building project, it is an investment in the future of our learners.
"We remain hopeful and deeply grateful for the support we continue to receive as we build a legacy that will serve generations to come," said Govender.
