African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has announced the appointment of Mike Mabuyakhulu as the new provincial convener of the party in KwaZulu-Natal, replacing Jeff Radebe.

The change forms part of a reconfigured Provincial Task Team (PTT) tasked with leading the ANC’s election campaign and broader organisational renewal in the province.

Addressing the media in Durban on Wednesday, Mbalula said the decision followed the expiry of the previous PTT’s term. The structure had been appointed in February 2025 with a mandate to rebuild organisational capacity in line with the ANC’s national conference resolutions, constitutional framework and election manifesto.

He said the National Working Committee (NWC), acting on the mandate of the National Executive Committee (NEC), moved to reconfigure both provincial and regional task teams after their terms lapsed. Their performance had been assessed through engagements at the provincial level.

Mbalula noted that, for now, only the PTT’s officials had been announced, with the full list of members, including the reconfiguration of Regional Task Teams across KwaZulu-Natal, set to be released next week.

He acknowledged the contribution of outgoing leaders, thanking Radebe for his service.

“Comrade Jeff is a stalwart and veteran of our movement who remains available to undertake organisational responsibilities,” Mbalula said, adding that Radebe would soon be reassigned to other roles within the party.

He also expressed appreciation for the contributions of Weziwe Thusi and Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

Mabuyakhulu will be supported by Bongi Sithole-Moloi as first deputy provincial convener and Siboniso Duma as second deputy convener. James Nxumalo has been appointed provincial coordinator, assisted by Siphesihle Mdaka as deputy coordinator, while Nomagugu Simelane will continue serving as provincial fundraiser.

Mbalula said the broader PTT would reflect considerations such as geographical representation, gender balance, youth inclusion, generational mix and organisational discipline. He added that the reconfigured leadership would be supported by a comprehensive programme of action, alongside the full-time deployment of NEC members and organisers across all regions.

“The ANC will not look outside itself. We will consolidate, reorganise and rebuild a strong African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal,” he said.

He further confirmed that all provinces had been instructed to convene regional general meetings over the weekend to brief structures on the outcomes of a recent special NEC meeting held in Johannesburg.

Consultations with alliance partners are already under way, with engagements with SANCO nearing completion and further discussions planned with internal leagues, including the Veterans, Women’s and Youth Leagues.
