An employee and two accomplices were arrested after an intensive multi-unit police investigation following the kidnapping and murder of seven family members in northern KwaZulu-Natal earlier this week.

According to police, the victims were abducted from a residence in Newtown, Newark on Tuesday night. Their bodies were later discovered in Melmoth, approximately 200 kilometres away.

The case emerged on Wednesday morning when a domestic worker arrived at the property and found signs of a break-in.

Seven occupants and a vehicle were missing.

Authorities were immediately alerted, prompting a coordinated response involving Newark police, KwaDukuza Detectives, the Tactical Response Team (TRT), the Provincial Counter Intelligence Unit, the Provincial Counter Kidnapping Unit, the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, and private security partners.

Police investigations led officers to the Hlomendlini area, where two suspects were arrested on Wednesday afternoon.

One of the suspects was found in possession of a cellphone belonging to one of the victims. Further leads directed officers to the Dendetu area in Sundumbili, where a third suspect was apprehended. He was found carrying a firearm. In total, police recovered eleven cellphones from the suspects.

Authorities allege that one of the suspects had been employed by the victims. He and his accomplices reportedly broke into the home, tied the victims with rope, and assaulted them.

The victims were forced into their own vehicle and transported to Melmoth.

According to police, the suspects reportedly demanded banking details and PINs from at least three victims.

After obtaining this information, they allegedly shot and killed three victims, while the remaining four were stabbed to death.

One of the victims was allegedly raped.

"Police also discovered that on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, several bank transfers were made from the victims’ accounts. The suspects led the police to Melmoth on Wednesday where the bodies of the seven victims aged between 20 and 83 years old were found.

"The suspects, aged 21, 26 and 28-years-old, will appear in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 24 April 2026," said police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi, commended police for the swift arrest of suspects and instructed investigating officers to ensure that justice is served so that the families of the victims may get closure.

“Some crimes are difficult for police to prevent, however if a crime happens, police’s reaction capacity must be equal to the task and crack the case. It is worrisome that one of the suspects was employed by the victims.

"We are urging employers to do background checks on all the people they employ and also study their suspicious behaviour. Some cases, especially in the farms and secluded areas, are committed by people who are familiar and close to the victims. Police will leave no stone unturned in the quest for a maximum jail sentence for the suspects. We will also analyse every piece of evidence to see if the suspect can be linked to other cases in and around the province”, said Mkhwanazi.
