A 36-year-old woman from uMlazi, south of Durban, has gone into hiding after allegedly surviving a brutal attack and attempted murder at the hands of her husband.

Wendy Zondi, from H-section, remains visibly shaken as she recounts the ordeal, which took place several months ago. She alleges that her husband, Kagiso Ndimande, 38, arrived home one evening under the influence of alcohol, sparking an argument.

According to Zondi, Ndimande repeatedly accused her of undermining him. When she tried to understand what was wrong, the situation escalated.

She alleges that he slapped her, struck her with a firearm on her head and back, and discharged the weapon during the assault. Zondi said he then forced her into the bedroom.

“At first, I thought he wanted us to be intimate. I had no idea what he was about to do,” she said.

Instead, she alleges that he subjected her to further violence, verbally degrading her before physically assaulting and dragging her across the floor, leaving her with bruises on her back and arms.

Zondi said she eventually managed to escape and seek help.

Fearing for her life, she has since left their home and is now in hiding.

“I decided to leave because I am afraid he may go to extreme lengths. I don’t feel safe,” she said.

Her fear has been compounded by the fact that her husband is currently out on bail following his arrest and court appearance.

“I am even more afraid now that he is out. I don’t know what he is thinking or what he might do next,” she added.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza confirmed that a suspect was arrested in connection with the incident.

“A man was arrested for the attempted murder of a 36-year-old woman who sustained serious injuries. He has appeared in the uMlazi Magistrate’s Court,” said Magwaza.
