Award-winning TV and radio broadcaster, author and podcaster Joanne Joseph , has a new legal current affairs programme, Case In Point.

The programme premiered on Thursday evening on SABC News Channel 404 on DStv. The hour-long show explores the complexities of South Africa’s legal system, examining major legal decisions and their broader impact on society.

Case In Point seeks to move beyond headline-driven reporting by unpacking the implications of key legal matters while also highlighting the experiences of ordinary South Africans whose interactions with the justice system often go unnoticed. The programme further aims to challenge the notion that justice is reserved for the powerful by amplifying the voices of marginalised citizens.

"I'm really honoured to be presenting 'Case in Point'. It comes at a time when there are multiple legal processes underway, from commissions of inquiry to court cases which have a direct bearing on our country, and by extension, our lives.

"We need to remain informed about these events, their impact on us, and our rights in relation to what is unfolding. On 'Case in Point' we'll offer thoughtful analysis, and empower viewers with the information they need to be active citizens of our democracy," said Joseph.

She has hosted a variety of programmes, spanning general news, business, and literature since her journalism career.

"'Case In Point' will be challenging as I don't have a legal background, although I am deeply interested in the law and justice, and how they intersect in our lives.

"While it will require a lot of research and study to understand these issues, one of our main aims as a team is to distill this information in palatable and interesting ways to make it as accessible as possible to our viewers," she said.

Joseph explained that the programme will focus on legal processes currently unfolding in the public sphere and explore how the law directly affects people’s lives.

"The team will be actively searching out the personal stories of individuals for whom the law has been a lever for real justice, and revisiting some of the cold cases where it has failed to do this effectively. We are truly aiming for a show that closes the gap between the law and justice," said Joseph.

She added that she was immediately intrigued when the SABC approached her with the concept for the programme, particularly because of its focus on improving public understanding of the law.

"Since we are also heading to the ballot box on 4 November, I wondered how we can make a truly informed decision with our vote, if we have merely passively consumed information about the events unfolding around us without properly interrogating them.

"Similarly, as we commemorate 30 years since our Constitution's adoption, I was curious about whether we fully understand our democratic rights and responsibilities, and how we ought to compel our leaders to utilise this inspiring document to ensure the equality, dignity and freedom promised to us in the Constitution. I realised that 'Case in Point' could be a powerful forum in which these issues could be scrutinised and debated on the SABC News platform which has embraced its pivotal public service mandate. For me personally, it was also an opportunity to return to the place where my television broadcasting career began in the 90s, and it has been gratifying to be welcomed back home," said Joseph.

Joseph currently also hosts SAFM’s mid-morning programme, ‘The Daily Discourse’. Over the years, she has also presented Talk Radio 702’s Afternoon Drive, the podcast series ‘Journeys with Joanne’, the 4pm–6pm ‘Afternoon News’ slot on eNCA, and the current affairs radio programme, The Power Update on Power FM.

She also served as the main anchor and bulletin writer for SABC 3’s News at 7.

Joseph began her broadcasting career at YFM in 1998 as a news presenter before moving on to roles at Classic FM, Network Radio News, and Business Day as a producer and presenter. In 1998 she joined SABC Africa as a producer and presenter.

In addition to her broadcasting career, Joseph is the author of two South African bestselling books, Drug Muled, Sixteen Years in a Thai Prison (non-fiction) and the historical fiction novel, Children of Sugarcane.

'Case in Point' airs weekly on Thursdays on SABC News Channel 404 on DStv from 8pm. A repeat of the show will air on Wednesdays at 7pm on SABC 3.
