The Mdadane family in Zwelibomvu, west of Durban, is preparing for a funeral after a lobolo celebration turned tragic last weekend when seven armed men allegedly stormed the family home, demanded cash paid during the negotiations and fatally shot a family member.

Fana Mdadane was rushed to RK Khan Hospital after suffering two gunshot wounds to the head, but was declared dead on arrival.

The induna of Zwelibomvu, Mbongeni Mdadane, said the lobolo delegation from the groom's family had arrived earlier in the day and the ceremony proceeded peacefully with relatives and guests in attendance.

However, shortly after the delegation and the relatives had left, the gunmen allegedly entered the house demanding money. The suspects also stole cellphones before fleeing with about R2 500 in cash, as most of the lobolo money had reportedly already been put away.

“These boys entered the home and demanded money. The deceased pleaded with them to remain calm and not use violence, but they became angry and started strangling him,” said Induna Mdadane.

“While restraining him, one of them pulled out a firearm and shot him twice at the back of the head. The bullets exited through his forehead.”

Mdadane said the family was devastated by the incident.

“I do not know what kind of criminality this is. I do not know where people get the audacity to storm into someone’s home during a celebration and commit such a terrible act,” he said.

He added that it would have been better if the suspects had taken the money without killing anyone.

Mdadane described Fana as a well-liked member of the community who was known for his talent as a song leader during traditional ceremonies in the area.

The family said they had no idea who might have been behind the attack.

“I would be lying if I said we suspect someone. We are completely in the dark,” said Mdadane.

Another family member said the incident had left the woman whose lobolo was being celebrated traumatised.

“She is heartbroken and keeps asking herself how what was meant to be a joyful and beautiful ceremony ended in bloodshed,” the relative said.

The family maintained that they have no known suspects, describing the deceased as a peaceful and easygoing person with no known enemies. The family thanked the police for their swift response after being alerted of the tragedy. The police could not be reached for comment.
