Three wanted suspects killed in dramatic police shootout in Mariannhill

Three wanted suspects were shot dead during a fierce gun battle with police in Mariannridge, Mariannhill, west of Durban, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The shootout occurred on May 20, 2026, after intelligence-driven police tracking led officers to the suspects' location. The trio were actively sought in connection with a high-profile Greenwood Park case involving kidnapping, fraud, and the illegal possession of firearms.

Police operational units spotted the suspects driving along Milky Way Road in Mariannridge and attempted to pull the vehicle over. However, the suspects defied the blue lights and siren instructions, choosing instead to accelerate and flee the scene.

Three suspected criminals died in a shootout with the police in the early hours of Wednesday in Mariannridge, Mariannhill, west of Durban. The suspects were linked to kidnapping and fraud.

A high-speed pursuit ensued, during which the suspects opened fire on law enforcement officers. Police returned fire, and amidst the chaos, the suspects’ speeding vehicle careened out of control and slammed into a tree.

"Three suspects sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the exchange of fire. Fortunately, no police officers were injured during the operation," a police source confirmed.

Following the shootout, officers searched the wreckage and recovered two illegal firearms along with several rounds of live ammunition.
