KwaZulu-Natal’s Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) has reaffirmed its commitment to removing reckless motorists from the province’s roads following the arrest and conviction of a South African Police Service (SAPS) officer for excessive speeding.
According to the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, the conviction of SAPS officer Siyabonga Cele demonstrates that no motorist is above the law, regardless of their profession or status.
Cele was arrested by RTI officers from Park Rynie after he was caught driving at 183 km/h in a 120 km/h zone, in contravention of the National Road Traffic Act.
He later appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court, where he was found guilty and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment or the option of paying a R12 000 fine.
The MEC praised the RTI’s ongoing road safety operations, particularly the #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign, which has reportedly achieved a 95% conviction rate through intensified law enforcement efforts.
“We are encouraged by the exceptional execution of Operation #NenzaniLaEzweni and the strong partnership between the RTI, the National Prosecuting Authority and SAPS, which continues to strengthen our prosecutorial strategy,” the statement read.
The department also highlighted previous arrests made during road safety operations, involving individuals from various professions, including lawyers, engineers, lecturers, accountants, doctors, police officers, soldiers, bodyguards, truck drivers, taxi drivers, teachers, civil servants, and undocumented foreign nationals.
The MEC issued a stern warning to motorists engaging in reckless or drunk driving, emphasizing that law enforcement authorities will continue taking decisive action against offenders.
“If you get arrested for reckless driving or drunk driving, please don’t call us,” concluded the statement.
