Family members kept vigil at Hazelmere Dam yesterday, hoping to find Umhlanga businessman, Tony Govender, who is presumed to have drowned.
Govender, 54, a former Navy Officer, had gone to the dam with friends on Friday when he allegedly attempted to retrieve a jet-ski that had drifted away in strong winds.
Govender's wife Essie, who joined the family at the dam on Saturday, said Tony had celebrated his birthday on May 25.
"His friends took him out as a treat. We spent the entire day searching at the dam but couldn't find him. We shall return on Sunday," said Essie.
Prem Balram of Reaction Unit South Africa said they will resume their search today.
"RUSA, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Search & Rescue Unit and Metro Police Search & Rescue conducted an extensive operation throughout Saturday to locate the missing man.
"According to information received, the victim was celebrating his 54th birthday with friends when he attempted to retrieve a jet-ski that had drifted away in strong winds. He reportedly entered the water, disappeared beneath the surface and did not resurface," said Balram.
He said the search involved the RUSA helicopter and waterborne resources, however no trace of the man was located.
