Alleged crime kingpin Katiso “KT” Molefe is expected to appear in the Johannesburg High Court on Thursday, where he and three co-accused face multiple charges linked to the murder of popular DJ Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka.

Molefe, 61, will appear alongside three alleged hitmen: Michael Pule Tau, 55, Tiego Floyd Mabisela, 45, and Musa Kekana.

The matter was postponed by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court in December last year to February 5, 2026.

At the time, Gauteng National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said authorisation had been granted to centralise the Vereeniging docket.

Due to the seriousness of the offences, the case was transferred to the High Court of South Africa, Gauteng Division, Johannesburg, for its first appearance.

Molefe and his co-accused face 35 charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and other serious offences.

The State alleges that Molefe orchestrated the murder of Oupa Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody, who was shot dead on 20 November 2022 in Woodmead, Johannesburg.

According to the prosecution, forensic evidence links the high-calibre rifles used in DJ Sumbody’s killing to several other high-profile murders, including those of Hector Buthelezi, also known as DJ Vintos, Don Tindleni and Armand Swart.

“The NPA remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring accountability by diligently pursuing all individuals implicated in serious and organised crime, guided at all times by the evidence and the interests of justice,” Mjonondwane said previously.

Katiso Molefe, alleged to have orchestrated a series of contract killings, is due back in the Johannesburg High Court on Thursday alongside three co-accused in connection with the murder of DJ Sumbody.

In October last year, Molefe was granted bail of R400,000 by the High Court of South Africa, Gauteng Local Division, Johannesburg, following the dismissal of an earlier bail application by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

The State argued that Molefe had the influence and resources to evade justice or interfere with witnesses.

However, the court found that he had demonstrated, on a balance of probabilities, the existence of exceptional circumstances warranting his release on bail in the interests of justice.

Molefe is accused of orchestrating a series of contract killings with his co-accused, including the murder of DJ Sumbody.

The charges are linked to an alleged organised crime network targeting DJs.

Mjonondwane said further evidence allegedly connects the same high-calibre rifles used in DJ Sumbody’s murder to other killings, including those of DJ Vintos, Hector Buthelezi and Armand Swart.

The NPA respects the court’s decision to grant Molefe bail but maintains that the charges against him are serious and linked to organised crime. The State remains committed to ensuring justice is served through a fair trial,” she said at the time.

Crime Intelligence boss Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo previously told the Madlanga Judicial Commission of Inquiry into corruption and criminal infiltration in the justice system that Molefe and murder accused businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala allegedly head the so-called “Big Five” cartel.

The syndicate is alleged to operate several criminal networks involved in drug trafficking, vehicle hijackings, tender fraud and extortion.
