The murder case linked to the killing of South African musician and businessman DJ Sumbody has been postponed to October 2026 after a pre-trial conference concluded in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed on Thursday that the matter involving alleged crime kingpin Katiso Molefe and his co-accused has been set down for trial on October 26, 2026.
Molefe appeared alongside his co-accused Michael Pule Tau, 55, Tiego Floyd Mabisela, 45, and Musa Kekana. According to the State, the group faces 35 charges in connection with the fatal shooting of DJ Sumbody, whose real name is Oupa Sefoka.
Sefoka was gunned down on November 20, 2022, in Woodmead, Johannesburg, in a killing that shocked South Africa’s music industry and sparked widespread calls for justice.
The NPA said the pre-trial proceedings have now been finalised, paving the way for the trial later this year.
“The pre-trial conference in the case against Katiso Molefe has concluded in the High Court of South Africa, Gauteng Division, Johannesburg, and the matter has been postponed to 26 October 2026 for trial,” said NPA spokesperson Magaboke Mohlatlole.
During the proceedings, defence lawyers confirmed that the State had provided all the necessary evidence ahead of the trial.
“The defence attorneys confirmed that they have received full disclosure from the State,” Mohlatlole said.
Prosecutors allege that Molefe orchestrated the murder with the assistance of his co-accused. The State further claims that forensic evidence links the high-calibre rifles used in the killing to several other high-profile murders.
According to the NPA, the firearms allegedly connect the case to the killings of DJ Vintos (Hector Buthelezi), Don Tindleni and Armand Swart, as well as other incidents believed to be part of a broader organised crime network.
“The accused face 35 charges, with the State alleging that Molefe orchestrated the murder together with his co-accused,” the statement said.
Molefe’s bail was extended under the same conditions, while his co-accused remain behind bars pending the trial.
The NPA said it remains ready to proceed with the case and intends to ensure accountability.
“The National Prosecuting Authority remains prepared to proceed with the trial and is committed to ensuring that justice is served,” Mohlatlole said.
