A collaboration among several institutions such as KwaZulu Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Services SETA and Property Practitioners Regulatory Authority (PPRA), an entity of the Department of Human Settlements, the programme aimed to empower over 700 youth, women, and persons with disabilities through accredited training and pathways into the real estate sector.

KwaZulu-Natal has marked a major milestone in youth empowerment and economic inclusion, with 537 young people graduating as certified real estate professionals during a ceremony held at the Durban International Convention Centre.
The graduation represents the culmination of the KwaZulu-Natal Real Estate Learnership Programme, a provincial initiative aimed at equipping young people, particularly those from township and rural communities, with the accredited training, workplace experience and regulatory certification required to enter the property sector.
The programme is part of a broader effort to expand economic opportunities in an industry that has historically been difficult for many young South Africans to access.
The 537 graduates completed a 12-month journey that included structured academic training, practical workplace learning and professional examinations.
Despite facing challenges such as flooding, load-shedding disruptions, limited digital access, and social pressures, many participants persevered and completed the programme, earning entry into the regulated real estate profession.
Several graduates’ journeys highlight the transformative impact of the initiative. One learner who was displaced by flooding continued studying using borrowed devices and has since secured employment with a regional estate agency. Another participant from a rural community has become the first member of their family to enter a recognised professional field.
A young mother who completed the programme is now preparing to launch a township-based rental management enterprise using her newly acquired qualification.
Two candidates advanced to the next level, earning principal-level certification, with one already opening a real estate franchise in Pietermaritzburg and creating employment opportunities for fellow graduates.
The programme positions KwaZulu-Natal as a leader in efforts to accelerate transformation within South Africa’s property sector. The new graduates bring greater diversity and fresh talent into the industry, particularly among youth, women and individuals from historically marginalised communities.
Officials from the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs said the graduates represent a new generation of property professionals ready to contribute to economic growth across the province.
“This programme demonstrates that when young people are given the right support, skills and access to opportunity, they can become active participants in the economy,” the department said.
Lehlogonolo Masoga, administrator of the Services Sector Education and Training Authority, said the programme highlights the value of structured skills development initiatives that link training directly with professional opportunities.
“This programme shows how targeted skills development can open real entry points into regulated professions,” said Masoga.
“By combining accredited training, workplace learning and professional certification, we are helping young people move from training into meaningful participation in the economy.”
Masoga added that the programme aligns with the goals of the National Skills Development Plan 2030, which emphasises stronger alignment between education, industry and employment outcomes.
He noted that the initiative also demonstrates the impact of collaboration between government, regulators and private sector partners.
“The success we are seeing in KwaZulu-Natal shows that this model can be expanded to support the next generation of property professionals across South Africa,” he said.
The graduates are now positioned to pursue careers in a range of areas within the property sector, including property sales, residential and commercial rentals, property management and administration, real estate marketing and entry-level valuation pathways. Many are also expected to explore entrepreneurial opportunities within the township and rural property markets.
To support their transition into the industry, the graduates will receive an additional 12 months of post-graduation support, including placement assistance, mentorship, and enterprise development coaching.
Later in the evening, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs will host an industry engagement dinner at the Durban International Convention Centre.
The gathering will bring together estate agencies, developers, regulators, and public-sector property entities to strengthen partnerships that can help absorb the new graduates into the sector through mentorship, employment opportunities and business collaborations.
The event is expected to further cement the province’s commitment to opening doors for young professionals while reshaping the future of the property industry in South Africa.
